Switching to 100% renewable electricity
Australia is blessed with wind and solar resources, and the cost of the technologies to convert these resources to electricity has plummeted. There have been many reports that have looked at how Australia can switch to 100% or very near 100% renewable electricity. What all the reports have in common is the same broad conclusions: it can be done; no new technology is required; and the cost can be low if properly planned.
As an example, a report by CSIRO and Energy Networks Australia - the national industry body representing Australia’s electricity transmission and distribution and gas distribution networks - found that such a transition can help to save consumers money, with the average residential electricity bill reduced by around $400 compared to the business-as-usual scenario.
What is more, the production of clean electricity creates new opportunities for jobs and exports. That's because we can produce clean electricity cheaper than elsewhere thanks to our excellent renewable resources. Opportunities exist to export clean electricity and clean hydrogen as well as other chemicals. These are not just aspirational goals but are already become reality - some of Australia's wealthiest individuals are already investing in projects to export our solar electricity.
